Besoke Carpenter from Chessington

Hi, I'm Tom O'Byrne

I'm the owner of TOB Carpentry (based in Chessington, Surrey)

My granddad was a carpenter, and looking back, that's probably where all of this really started.

I used to help him out on jobs when I was younger, and I was always better with my hands than I ever was with studying.

Some things get passed down without you even noticing at the time, and carpentry is the one path I've never really wanted to move away from.

Fully Qualified, With Over 14 Years Behind Me

I hold NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Carpentry and Joinery, along with a City & Guilds Diploma in Bench Joinery, Level 2 with Distinction.

I've been working in carpentry and joinery for more than 14 years, and I placed 2nd at the SkillBuild National Carpentry Finals.

None of that means much sitting on its own. What it actually means is that I know how to plan a job properly, spot problems before they become expensive ones, and deliver a finish you'll be genuinely happy with.

From Apprentice to Business Owner

I started my apprenticeship at 16 and spent the years since working across a real mix of environments, from high-end residential properties and traditional workshop joinery to commercial fit-outs, TV studios, film sets and scenic construction.

Along the way, I moved into more supervisory and management roles, which gave me a solid grounding in quoting, planning and dealing directly with clients.

Eventually, I felt ready to take everything I'd learned and do it for myself, seeing each job through from that first conversation right through to the final fit, rather than handing it on partway through.

That's exactly what TOB Carpentry is built to do.

What I Enjoy Getting Stuck Into

Bespoke bifold doors are one of my favourites, especially when the kit is a bit trickier to work with, because getting that finish just right is genuinely satisfying.

I also enjoy fitted wardrobes, alcove units and wall panelling- really anything that transforms how a room feels and works.

One recent job that's stuck with me was a full oak bifold door set, complete with a matching oak frame and architrave. Straightforward in theory, but the kind of project where the details really matter, and I was so pleased with how it turned out.

What You Can Expect From Me

Organisation and communication matter to me just as much as the finish itself.

I keep the site clean and tidy throughout the job, not just at the end, and I bring my own vacuum cleaner so nothing gets left behind.

I'll always talk you through the options rather than assuming I know best, and I aim to finish every job on time, or a little earlier where I can.
